Myopia Management for Children
Proud to be a Treehouse Eyes Partner Provider
Did you know that among children and adolescents aged 5 to 19, nearly one in three are myopic? Some studies show that myopia in school-aged children (6-17 years) has gone up, with studies indicating that 34% of children aged 12-17 are myopic.
Signs to look out for:
-
Squinting
-
Sitting too close to the screen
-
Difficulty seeing the board
-
Frequent eye rubbing
-
Complaints of headaches
-
Blinking excessively
-
Holding books close to the face
What is myopia?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, usually begins in childhood and tends to worsen as the eye continues to grow, typically until early adulthood. As myopia progresses, distance vision becomes increasingly blurry, requiring stronger glasses to maintain clear vision.
What are the risk factors for myopia?
Myopia risk factors include genetics (having one or both parents myopic), an insufficient amount of time spent outdoors, and excessive near work (time spent reading, school work, & digital screens). Childhood myopia is progressive, which is why your child may need a new prescription every year or two. Unless treated, a child’s myopia will continue to worsen until early adulthood.
How can myopia impact a child’s health?
Childhood myopia places a child at a greater risk of developing serious eye diseases later in life, as compared to non-myopic children, and the odds only increase as myopia continues to progress. In fact, a child with myopia is 2 to 40 times more likely to develop myopic maculopathy (also known as myopic macular degeneration, a serious vision-threatening complication) depending on their degree of nearsightedness. Retinal detachment is another serious eye condition that can cause permanent blindness. A myopic child is 3 to 21 times more likely to develop this emergency eye condition in adulthood. Moreover, children with myopia have a threefold risk of developing glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, in the long run.
What can parents do to help slow myopia progression?
We know that parents want what’s best for their children. So here are a few recommendations that will help keep your child’s eyes healthy — whether or not myopia has set in. Take your kids outside to play. Several studies have indicated that children who spend over 2 hours outdoors during the day have lower levels of myopia and slower myopia progression.
Are Myopia Management Contact Lenses Safe for Children?
Because certain myopia treatments include contact lens wear, many parents ask whether they’re safe to wear for young children. Research suggests that contact lenses for children are just as safe for children as they are for adults.
How does it work?
Our doctors use state-of-the-art equipment to develop a personalized treatment plan for your child. Our non-invasive treatments include customized contact lenses and special prescription eye drops. Data from children using our patent-pending Treehouse Vision System® treatment plan shows a 78% decrease in the progression of their myopia vs. no treatment. At your initial consultation, our doctors will determine the treatment that will work best for your child.
Can myopia be managed?
Absolutely! The goal of myopia management is to slow or even stop the progression of myopia and reduce its impact on your child’s life. The younger myopia management begins, the more effective the treatment. We are excited at InSight Eye Optique to announce the launch of our children’s myopia management service in partnership with Treehouse Eyes®, the country’s leading myopia management service. The revolutionary system, designed to treat your child’s myopia and significantly reduce the threat of more serious eye diseases, is one of the most important innovations since glasses were first prescribed hundreds of years ago!

I’ve lived in Brambleton 20 yrs. My family has been going to insight eye optique since it opened. This place epitomizes what a small business should be. In a day and age when any small, privately owned business can hardly stand to compete with the bigger corporate stores…..they rely on customer service and professionalism I can’t recall being anything but truly fantastic. Simply put, I can’t say enough good things about Insight Eye Optique and their staff. Stop in their store, you will SEE yourself!😜

Insight eye Optique was great! Very polite, throughly checked my eyes and did a great job. Did tests that other eye doctors I have seen have skipped. I will definitely return with other family members.

Hands down the best experience! From the exam all the way to getting a new pair of glasses. Everyone, from the doctor to the front desk and sales associates, are very knowledgeable and attentive. I initially switched to Insight Eye Optique because they carry certain frame brands and I’m so happy I did. The service is top-notch and I got my eyeglasses earlier than expected! Thank you!
